Dr. Darwin Prioleau, professor of dance, was previously the Chair of the Department of Dance and the Dean of the School of The Arts Humanities and Social Sciences at the College at Brockport, SUNY.
Prioleau’s professional training credits include the Alvin Ailey American Dance Centre (as a merit scholar and apprentice) and the International Center de Danse in Cannes, France (as a merit scholar). Her professional career spans over twelve years in New York dancing with various dance companies, including soloist with The Nat Horne Company, Contemporary Dance Spectrum and Ed Kresley Dance Company, as well as a featured dancer in several off-Broadway musicals.
Dr. Prioleau has worked intensively with such dance masters as Alvin Ailey, Jimmy Truitte, Joyce Trisler and Matt Mattox. She continues to free-lance as a modern and jazz dance choreographer and master teacher in the Ohio, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York and European dance communities. Her areas of expertise include jazz dance, modern (Horton Technique), dance pedagogy and choreography.
Nationally, Dr. Prioleau is actively involved in arts education advocacy and has published articles in Journal of Dance Education and Arts Education Policy Review and has presented papers on Leadership of the Arts in Higher Education, Jazz Dance in the Curriculum, and Diversity issues at various national conferences. Prioleau is the recipient of the National Dance Education Organization’s 2006 Outstanding Leadership Award. She has served as President of the National Dance Education Association and Board Member of the International Council of Fine Arts Deans. The College at Brockport acknowledged Dr. Prioleau as a 2017 Prometheus Visionary.
