Garth Fagan, distinguished professor emeritus, taught at SUNY Brockport beginning in 1970 when he established his now world famous company, Garth Fagan Dance. The recipient of a Tony Award Drama Desk Award, Astaire Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, and the Lawrence OlivierAward for his choreography for Disney's Lion King, he has also received a Dance Magazine Award, Bessie Award, Fulbright Distinguished Fellowship, Guggenheim Fellowship, and four honorary doctorate degrees. In addition to restaging Disney's Lion King internationally, he has mounted work on major dance companies, including American Ballet Theater, Dance Theater of Harlem, and the José Limon Dance Company and continues to choreograph for his own company. He taught Fagan technique, composition, and repertory classes in the department. His students were occasionally invited to take a company class at its Rochester studio and a few have become company members.
