It's no secret that todays job market has become increasingly competitive. The college diploma is no longer the distinguishing factor that it used to be. So how can you set yourself apart from the thousands of other college grads? Delta College answers this question in two ways; professional development courses and internships.

Professional Development Courses

The Delta curriculum includes three professional development courses that provide students with a competitive edge because they begin developing their professional skills early in their academic careers. These courses provide students with the tools needed to enter and thrive in today’s job market. Some of the topics covered include:mi

  • writing résumés
  • writing cover letters
  • interviewing skills
  • oral presentations (speeches)
  • networking
  • negotiation skills
  • ethical dilemmas and more!

Recently, our students have vocalized an interest in preparing for life after college. They want to learn how to budget, establish credit, obtain a mortgage, and plan for retirement. We listened to their request and this fall, for the first time ever, we have incorporated a financial literacy unit into the third professional development course.

Internships

The professional development courses are designed to compliment the internship experiences. Each course is designed to help prepare students with the skills they need to obtain an internship, excel while at their internships, and begin establishing a professional network.

With the help of faculty mentors, students network within their communities or within the wider job market to find internships and field placements. These experiences help students explore potential career options and provide valuable insight as to whether or not a particular career path is a good fit. Many students have jump started their careers through a Delta internship.
