Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc. Award(Multiple Awards)

Award amount: $6,000 totalThis award was established by Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc./WHEC TV-10 to support the efforts of two eligible junior-level meteorology majors who are actively pursuing a career in meteorology. Recipients will receive the award amount distributed evenly over the course of four consecutive semesters. (No application.)


  • Entering junior year of study as defined by College policy
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 entering the junior year of study
  • Be a current student or incoming transfer student
  • Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA for each semester after the initial selection in order to retain the award

Department Scholar Awards (Multiple Awards)

These awards are given to one qualifying student in each of the majors: earth science, geology, meteorology and water resources who have demonstrated academic excellence and additional scientific involvement throughout their undergraduate education. Recipients receive special recognition at the Honors & Awards ceremony and at Commencement. (No application.)


  • Must have senior status and be actively pursuing a degree in one of the earth sciences
  • Have a GPA of 3.5 or above in their chosen major
  • Preference given to those who demonstrate additional involvement in their field

Science Scholar (Multiple Awards)

Award amount: $2,300 total

These awards are available to incoming freshmen who are pursuing a major in one of the earth sciences: earth science, geology, meteorology or water resources and who demonstrate a high level of achievement in high school and on SATs. (Application.)


  • High School average of 86 percent or better
  • SAT scores of 1100 or better with a minimum of 600 on the mathematics portion
  • Declare a major in one of the earth sciences by the end of the first semester
  • Make adequate progress toward a Bachelor of Science degree in declared major
  • Must maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 in major courses

Victor E. Schmidt Memorial Scholarship(Single Award)

Award amount: $1,000

This scholarship will be awarded to one senior in the earth science major who is pursuing teacher certification in elementary or secondary education, has completed at least 26 hours of required coursework at Brockport, and will complete their student teaching in the academic year that the award is applied. (Application.)


  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.2 in the courses required for the earth science major
  • Demonstrate academic excellence as judged by the department's selection committee
  • Complete a 500-word essay discussing why they would like a career as a science educator and describing any activities in the field of education in which they have been involved
