Job Title: Teaching Assistant, English (2 positions)
English Teaching Assistants provide one-on-one writing support for students as tutors in the Academic Success Center and in the English Department. English TAs are typically scheduled for 15 hours of tutoring per week in the Student Learning Center, and hold 5 office hours per week in the English Department, for a total of 20 hours/week. English TAs report to the staff of the Student Learning Center and to the English Graduate director. Teaching Assistants receive regular training through the Academic Success Center.
The modality of tutoring work in the Academic Success Center in Fall 2021 (in-person, remote, or a mixture thereof) is TBD depending upon College work safety protocols. TAs will be informed of work modalities and protocols in advance of their start date, and will work with Academic Success Center staff to schedule their weekly shifts.
Graduate Assistants receive a tuition scholarship for 9 credits of in-state tuition per semester (up to 30 credits), and an annual stipend of $7,500.
Teaching Assistants are represented by the Graduate Student Employees Union (GSEU, CWA Local 1104).
Successful Teaching Assistants will be accomplished academic writers with an excellent command of grammar and usage. They will also be able to effectively communicate with an array of students; exhibit flexibility in adapting to student needs; and work collaboratively with other tutors and writing center staff.
All current and admitted English graduate students are eligible to apply. Teaching Assistants must maintain full-time enrollment status by taking 9 credits of coursework per semester (if a student has fewer than 9 graduate credits remaining to complete their degree, they should register for only program-required credits).
Employment as a graduate assistant begins in the third week of August, 2021 (exact start date TBA). All graduate and teaching assistants are required to attend mandatory training and orientation session during that week (either on the Brockport campus or virtually) – again, details will be provided when available.
