Welcome Back!

Welcome back to the Fine Arts Series, but also welcome back to SUNY Brockport, the name the College reinstated last year, though the change may have been eclipsed by the rest of what went on during the pandemic. I am saying “Welcome back” to you, our arts patrons, but around campus we are saying it to students, faculty, staff, and just about everyone else we see.

Last year’s health crisis up-ended life as we knew it. However, we adjusted to a new way of doing things. We presented various concerts and performances virtually. And our Gallery was operational, though only open to people on campus. Now, the lights on our stages will be burning bright again, featuring wonderful performances, including the very funny musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which was originally supposed to be performed in April 2020.

If there is a silver lining to what we endured, it may be that very often those sorts of situations can be the basis of inspiration. We may very well see manifestations of COVID-19 in visual art or visions of “social distancing” in some of the choreography we will see on Hartwell’s stages. Just as life imitates art on occasion so, too, does art reflect life.

My colleagues and I look forward to welcoming you back to performances and exhibitions all through the academic year.

Thank you,
Jose Maliekal
Dean, School of Arts and Sciences
