COIL: Brockport’s Virtual Global Classroom

Global learning is not exclusive to traveling abroad and thanks to current technology, it has never been easier to bring the world into the classroom. Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) advances SUNY Brockport’s strategic plan and create greater access to global engagement for our students. COIL projects prepare students with the necessary employment skills to be successful in today’s culturally diverse workforce and global economy.

COIL in Action

Interested in exploring a COIL partnership with SUNY Brockport? Please complete our online inquiry form and a representative from the College will be in contact with you. You can also contact the SUNY COIL Center for more details about becoming a member of their virtual global community.

Getting Started

Notify CGEE of Your Interest

Are you interested in putting together a course or would you just like more information? Complete the form and a CGEE representative will follow up with you shortly.

Identify A Partner

Like an online course, it is advised that you connect with your partner and begin course development at least one semester prior to offering the collaboration. You may also join the SUNY COIL Global Network to find a compatible partner, if you do not have one.

Collaborate & Design

Once you have found an international partner, consider how you will most effectively incorporate COIL into each of your courses:

  • Define student learning goals and identify areas of overlap with your courses
  • Determine the length of the interaction
  • Design comparative and collaborative activities
  • Select methods and tools for collaboration
  • Develop a project plan with timelines, roles, and assessment

Faculty can incorporate a global dimension into a course in a variety of forms, such as:

  • Single Course Assignments
  • Co-Teaching
  • Peer Review
  • Cooperative Learning
  • Online Discussions
  • Project-Based Learning

Mentorship

SUNY Brockport has a group of devoted faculty and professional staff who meet monthly to discuss strategies to facilitate intercultural learning and share tips to advance COIL at Brockport. Free SUNY COIL Design Workshops

Consider registering for a SUNY COIL training. When you register, use the payment code BROC so the course fee is waived. These workshops can also be a great way to find a COIL partner.

Build a COIL Profile

Faculty are encouraged to build a personalized COIL profile on ImmerseU. This is an effective approach to get matched with faculty across the globe who are seeking a partner to COIL with. This guide provides step-by-step instructions to build your profile. For support contact Suzanne Orzech from ImmerseU suzanne@class2class.com.
