Anticipated graduation year: 2014
ISS: Why did you choose to study at Brockport?
Phi: After 4 years of studying in France, I got the chance to do an exchange program with MICEFA. Finally, I chose SUNY Brockport over other possibilities because SUNY Brockport meets my expectations in discovering culture, studying and living standards. Since I saw pictures of Brockport, I have loved this charming village and the people here are very friendly.
ISS: What has been your most memorable experience while at Brockport?
Phi: This exchange year is filled up with wonderful memories; each one of them is special and irreplaceable. For example, the welcome week for international students was warmly organized. It actually helped us a lot in getting used to daily life in Brockport and to get acquainted with campus and meet many friends. I also had a chance to visit Niagara Falls, which is one of the most beautiful landscapes I've ever seen. I also will never forget the moments with my friends when we got together, cooked our traditional foods and had a happy time.
ISS: What are your classes like? Which one is your favorite?
Phi: My impression from the beginning of the year is that I can receive all instruction and advice whenever I need it from professors and people in the faculty at Brockport. This is my first time being in the United States and taking courses that are completely in English, so there were many difficulties that I confronted. Thanks to all my professors who are always available to help me, I am getting better and I am able to adapt with the way of studying here. They are also very experienced and dedicated in teaching: in class, they always try to give us examples from their experiences which are from real life situations and to find the best way to support us in our studies. My favorite class is Fundamentals of Investing. Although the class is heavy in content and there are a lot of assignments and teamwork, I feel that I have learned a lot and everything is very interesting to me.
ISS: How does school here differ from that in your home country?
Phi: I come from Vietnam but I went to university in France to study. Both France and the U.S. have a very developed education. However, personally, I feel what I have learned in Brockport is more practical and the way of teaching is more interesting and makes students more actively engaged with the class. Also, Brockport has a wide range of facilities such as a gym, ice arena, various stadiums and more.
ISS: Do you live on campus or off campus? What has living here in Brockport been like?
Phi: Living on campus for me is the best way to meet new friends, discover new cultures and share good moments and memories with others. By living on campus, I feel very happy that I met a lot of good friends, especially my suitemates. They are very nice and friendly with me and thanks to them I had a chance to know other great people. They have helped me improve my English, and we also go to the gym every week and enjoy watching soccer and volleyball matches. I also love the menus and all the delicious dishes from Brockport Dining Services, especially from Brockway Dining Hall where I remember being warmly welcomed by the staff there.
ISS: Prior to coming to school, what did you do to prepare for life in the United States?
Phi: Before coming to school, I focused on studying English in order to improve it and to be able to be confident in communicating with people. I also collected information about the town of Brockport, its weather and the living cost.
ISS: What advice would you give to international student who was thinking about attending Brockport?
Phi: From my experience, I would say that Brockport is a wonderful destination for other international students because we all have a means to develop here in terms of studying and living experiences. International students coming here can rapidly adapt to the environment thanks to the guide of all the professors and staff. The Office of International Student Services always cares about our needs and is always available to answer our questions.
