Keep in mind that you are permitted to enter the United States:
NO earlier than 30 days before and NO later than 30 days after the beginning date indicated on your I-20 Form
Arriving at the Port of Entry
In order to enter the United States, you will need to have the following. Be sure to pack all of following documents in a carry-on bag:
- A valid passport,
- Your F-1 student visa (except for Canadian students),
- Your I-20 form, and
- Financial documentation to show adequate financial resources.
I-20 ID Copy
Once you arrive at a port of entry into the United States, you will need to present the above documents to the immigration officer. The officer will keep one copy of your I-20 form and stamp another copy that will be returned to you, which is known as the “I-20 ID Copy". This “I-20 ID Copy" is a permanent record of your permission to enter and remain in the United States. This “I-20 ID Copy" must be kept in your possession for as long as you remain a student.
In addition, you may be issued a completed I-94 Arrival-Departure Record, which will be issued by an immigration officer at your port of entry into the U.S. This I-94 is extremely important as it indicates your visa status and the date when your permission to remain in the U.S. expires.
Ports of entry in the U.S. are beginning to process the I-94 electronically. You may not receive an actual paper I-94 Arrival-Departure Record. However if you are issued I-94, it must be kept in your passport at all times.
Tell Us Your Arrival Date
Once you have decided on a date of entry, please let the Office of International Student Services know. There are two benefits in telling us your arrival date:
- International Student Orientation: We strongly encourage all international students to arrange their schedules in order to participate in the International Student Orientation. Welcome meals, social activities and useful information about SUNY -Brockport are provided during orientation.
- Transportation provided: When you reserve your flight, please arrive at the Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) and try to arrive on a weekday if possible. The Office of International Student Services is likely to provide transportation to pick you up. Otherwise, you will need to arrange for your own transportation to campus.
If you have not already made arrangements with the SUNY- Brockport and are choosing to arrive on a date other than those specified by the Office of International Student Services, you will need to look for your own transportation. The easiest way to get to Brockport is to first arrive in Rochester, New York (ROC), whether it is by airplane, train, bus, or taxi.
If flying, try to reserve a flight that arrives directly at the Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC) because it is the closest airport to SUNY- Brockport. Some students choose John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York City. However, you will still need to take a train or another flight to get to SUNY- Brockport if you arrive in New York City.
Train and Buses
There are also trains and buses available from many major cities. Each train and bus transportation has different advantages and disadvantages. Please check each condition provided below and decide what to take.
Train: The fare may be more expensive than using a bus, however it tends to be more easy and comfortable since you do not need to transfer trains like you may have to do with bus travel.
- Amtrak (http://www.amtrak.com/home)
Bus: Fares are typically a lot cheaper than the use of train. Often buses stop in different cities so that may make your travel a little longer.
The easiest way to get to campus is by taxi. This will cost approximately US $60 plus a 15 percent tip (US $7 to $8). After you have picked up your luggage at the baggage claim area (or have retrieved it from the train or bus you arrived on), call for a taxi at (585) 235-7777 (If you have trouble, please visit an information desk for help). Tell the taxi driver that you are a student and you need to go to the State University of New York - Brockport campus. From the Rochester Airport, students receive a $50 flat rate fare to campus when using Genesee Taxi. Show your acceptance letter or other document that identifies you as a Brockport student and show it to the driver. The taxi stand for Genesee Taxi is located outside of the airport using the Ground Transportation exits.
Once the taxi has picked you up, tell the driver again that you are going to the State University of New York - Brockport campus and indicate which residence hall or off-campus apartment you are scheduled to live in. It is also advised to have a printed map of campus to assist your taxi driver to find your resident hall.
