The concentration contains both traditional classroom experiences and a culminating internship experience.
The regulations of the Commissioner of Education of the New York State Department of Education require individuals who coach an interscholastic athletic team to complete an approved program for coaches prior to or within the first three years of their employment.
Initial employment requires:
- a valid First Aid Certificate
- a valid CPR Certificate
- the completion of an approved child abuse workshop/class
- a series of courses approved by the State of New York
The College at Brockport's coaching minor fulfills this requirement and also provides greater depth in preparation for prospective coaches in schools, sports clubs, community programs, colleges, or other athletic organizations.
The coaching minor takes four (4) semesters to complete so students should declare a minor in coaching by the start of their junior year and begin taking specific required/elective courses no later than the first semester of their junior year, if not earlier.
For detailed information about the requirements of the minor, please consult the Undergraduate Studies Catalog.
