Professor Kelly Shevlin was born and raised in Rochester. After graduating from the University of Rochester School of Nursing (UR SON) with her BSN in 1999, she began her career at Rochester General Hospital on a vascular surgery unit. In 2000, she started working in the Burn/Trauma ICU at the University of Rochester Medical Center. While there, she also trained as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner and during this time she discovered a passion for Forensic Nursing. That led to her completing a course in Legal Nurse Consulting at the School of Nursing. After this she switched gears from bedside nurse in the ICU to the Office of Counsel at URMC in 2007 where she worked as a Senior Claims Investigator.
In 2008, Shevlin obtained her Master's Degree in Health Information, Education and Technology, again at the UR SON. After spending seven years in OCMC assisting in the management and defense of medical malpractice claims and lawsuits, in 2014, she changed locations to Strong West in Brockport where she was the Regional Quality Assurance Coordinator for the URMC Department of Emergency Medicine. This afforded her the opportunity to also return to the bedside at Strong West Emergency, the region's first and only off-campus emergency department. In 2015, she achieved designation as a Certified Forensic Nurse. After her QA role ended in 2017, she remained in the ED while also working in outpatient oncology. In 2018, Professor Bopp joined SUNY Brockport as an Instructor in the RN to BSN program. She maintains her clinical position in the ED and also as a SANE.
Professor Shevlin enjoys continuing her education and interest in Forensic and Holistic/Integrative nursing. She has had her Level III Reiki certification for several years and is working toward completing her training as a certified women's empowerment coach. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her two teenage daughters, as well as running, yoga, reading and soap making.
