How and why did you decide to apply for The College at Brockport MPA program?

After moving back to Rochester from Houston, Texas and being 3 years separated from my undergraduate studies, I decided I wanted to continue on to grad school, something I originally intended to do before getting sidetracked by various unfulfilling job opportunities. Brockport’s MPA program had an excellent reputation within the Rochester community, and the Arts Management certificate allows me to augment my public administration studies with Fine Arts coursework, which will hopefully help lead me to a career in the arts.

What have you enjoyed most about the program so far?

Organizational Behavior with Dr. Prather. She taught us to take a “personal inventory” of our strengths and to use those to shape the kind of leader we become, rather than have a personal expectation to be proficient at everything. It was exactly the advice I needed to hear at a time when I didn't feel like I was particularly skilled at any one thing, and now I have a much clearer idea of the career path I want to take.

What does your job entail?

I work for a financial institution that gets hired by large banks (mainly Bank of America) to submit their overflow foreclosure claims to the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Did that put you to sleep? It’s not very glamorous nor vaguely related to my eventual career goals, but it helps pay for school and keep bacon on the table while I continue the MPA program.

What are your future goals?

>My background and interests largely lie within the realm of arts administration, arts advocacy, and cultural policy. Ultimately I’d love to work for the National Endowment for the Arts or a similar organization that’s committed to funding young artists and raising cultural awareness through the arts.
