How and why did you decide to apply for The College at Brockport MPA program?

I came to the area through the Rochester AmeriCorps program. My first glance into this multi-layered community came by way of a “Reality Tour” that all new AmeriCorps members took. I started working with Runaway and Homeless Youth populations 5 years ago through this program, and have continued working with these populations through employment and volunteer opportunities. My experiences working with this population, lead me to the political and advocacy sphere. It was the policy issues which I really found fascinating, and ignited my desire to continue expanding my knowledge on administrative processes.

What have you enjoyed most about the program so far?

I have found that the subjects that I take are easily transferable from the classroom to the office. Each of the courses I have taken thus far have eased and increased my understanding of the day to day work that I do. In particular, I have found that the elective “Negotiations Management” taught by Dr. Faith Prather, was an extraordinarily beneficial course. The material that is shared within that course has helped me with professional development more than any class I have taken.

What does your job entail?

I work directly for Rochester City Councilmember At-Large, Matt Haag. I am currently his one man office, so I work with all constituent issues, I draft all correspondence, maintain community contacts, read and research legislation, and an assortment of other tasks which change by the day. The position provides an interesting and holistic view of what is happening in and around the City of Rochester.

What are your future goals?

I’m not sure yet, I’m hoping to get an internship or two which may point my compass in the right direction. At this point I know I would enjoy working with government either from the inside or in advocacy.
