The department is home to dynamic undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare students to think critically, analyze complex social problems, and present innovative solutions, programs, and policies that enhance the health and safety of our communities.

The faculty of the Department of Public Health and Health Education are passionate about their role in developing future public health professionals. Through thoughtful advising, experiential and service learning, and community engagement, faculty members promote student success within and outside the classroom.

Our alumni are employed in a variety of organizations, including county and state health departments, worksite health programs, non-profit organizations, advocacy organizations, and colleges and universities. Alumni also contribute to the success of current students, often serving as guest speakers, mentors, and internship supervisors. Our graduates are also well prepared to pursue graduate studies in public health or other health-related fields.

Current students are provided significant opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills needed to work in a dynamic field serving diverse populations. A number of high impact practices are employed to set our programs and students apart from others, including experiential learning, undergraduate research, and community involvement. Many of our students complete their course of study with public health and health education experiences in organizations such as the Monroe County Public Health Department, Quad A for Kids, Center for Youth Services, Planned Parenthood, RESTORE Sexual Assault Services, and Trillium Health, formerly AIDS Rochester. Students enrolled in our Public Health Education program are prepared to sit for the National Health Education Specialist Exam and to become a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).
