Social Media

Social media is a term widely used to describe a set of tools that, when used properly, help to promote interaction, discussion and community, allowing people and institutions to build relationships and share information. Social media can spread your messages all over world in no time all.

There are a variety of social media options that can be used to enhance the presence of campus offices and departments. Some examples are Facebook, Twitter, blogs, Wikis, Instagram, YouTube, Google+, and Flickr.

The College of William and Mary has shared some great advice about getting started on social media. We think it's well worth reading.

Tufts University has shared some key principles about social media that we think are awesome. They should help inform our strategy when it comes to implementing and using social media tools. They are:

  • Social media is about conversations, community, connecting with personalities and building relationships. It is not just a broadcast channel or a sales and marketing tool.
  • Authenticity, honesty and open dialogue are key.
  • Social media not only allows you to hear what people say about you, but enables you to respond. Listen first, speak second.
  • Be compelling, useful, relevant, engaging. Don’t be afraid to try new things, but think through your efforts before kicking them off.

On their site Tufts encourages people to "Think Twice, Publish Once," meaning take that extra moment or two to make sure what you are about to post is appropriate, useful and engaging.  We think this is a motto to live by. 

If you post as the official voice of a Brockport department, office or other entity, we encourage you to keep these guidelines in mind:

  • Be respectful and civil. 
  • Be accurate and honest.
  • Own up to your mistakes.
  • Assume everything you post is permanent. Everything on the Internet can be archived. Even if you think you've deleted it.
  • Respect the copyright and fair use policies of the social sites you use. If you share someone's work on your feed, give them credit.
  • Post, and interact, consistently. Like a good garden, the only way to get your social media community to grow is to give it the right attention.

If you would like to start a social media project, please contact College Communications to review best practices before you launch the project. We also invite you to join our Social Media User Group, an informal monthly gathering designed to share tips, tricks and trends in social media, as well as connect with others who are maintaining social media sites on campus. We meet the first Thursday of each month from 9-10 am.
