Part-time Maintenance Assistant position in the Office of Facilities, 20 hours per week, Contingent Perm, 10 am to 8 pm - Saturdays & Sundays, Line #: 43132
Maintenance Assistants perform routine, repetitive maintenance, installation, and repair tasks in one or a combination of the mechanical, building construction, motor equipment, and electrical trades. Incumbents may also perform journey-level activities, under supervision or after receiving detailed instructions, to learn and perfect their skills. Maintenance Assistants may perform the activities of this class with considerable independence when supervision is not available and are expected to perform routine activities with considerable independence.
Maintenance Assistants identify, remove, pack, transport, or dispose of hazardous materials including asbestos, lead-based paint, waste oil, fuel, and more. They also assist in the performance of asbestos removal projects to facilitate repairs. Maintenance Assistants handle various types of hazardous materials. such as: asbestos, refrigerants, gas, fuel oil, solvents, and more. They also work in confined space situations using personal protective equipment.
•Performs daily inspections of facilities to identify a wide variety of building maintenance tasks or deficiencies needing attention in various zones.
•Performs corrective actions to identified facilities deficiencies, and/or reports maintenance concerns requiring skilled trades to the appropriate supervisor. Corrective actions include but are not limited to: semi-skilled tasks of the structural, locksmith, mechanical/plumbing and HVAC/R trades as well as basic electrical work and architectural finishes.
•Assists skilled trades’ persons when needed.
•Reviews the Footprints work order system daily and provides appropriate feedback via Footprints.
•Performs snow removal tasks as assigned.
•Performs routine and emergency tasks involving scheduled/unscheduled overtime.
•Identifies, removes, packs, transports, or disposes of hazardous materials including asbestos, lead-based paint, waste oil, fuel, and more.
•Assists in the performance of asbestos removal projects to facilitate repairs.
•Handles various types of hazardous materials such as: asbestos, refrigerants, gas, fuel oil, solvents, and more.
•Work in confined space situations using personal protective equipment.
•Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade or trades to which assigned.
•Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
•Working knowledge of applicable codes and regulations for the trade or trades to which assigned.
•Ability to read plans, specifications, manuals, and blueprints.
•Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor.
•Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
•Ability to supervise others.
•Ability to climb ladders and work at heights on scaffolds and platforms.
•Ability to use the tools, machines, equipment, and materials of the trade or trades to which assigned.
•As assigned, ability to operate a motor vehicle.
•Ability to work weekends, holidays, scheduled/unscheduled overtime, shift work and college special events.
•Ability to read and understand written and oral instructions.
•Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
•Ability to alternate in different zones (buildings) as needed.
•Effective and respectful interpersonal skills.
•High School Diploma or GED.
•Valid NYS Driver License.
Two years of experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled trades worker or completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course.
•Technical training/education in related skills.
•Skilled in one or more trades.
•Demonstrates computer literacy.
•Willingness to learn new skills.
