Communication Professor Publishes Article on Motherhood and Environmentalism
Dr. Christopher Thomas has published an article in the peer reviewed Southern Communication Journal on the ways motherhood helps women advocate for environmental justice in marginalized communities.
Dr. Christopher Thomas has published an essay on motherhood and environmental justice in the latest edition of the Southern Communication Journal. The Southern Communication Journal is a peer reviewed journal focusing on significant contributions to human communication. Dr. Thomas' article focuses on the Mothers of East Los Angeles — an environmental justice group started and led by older Mexican American women — and the organization's campaign to prevent the construction of a state prison in their neighborhood. He argues that the women enacted motherwork that protected the well-being of the neighborhood's children, in addition to transforming motherhood into a communal responsibility to look after the neighborhood as a mother would their child.
