The Department of African and African American Studies (AAS) at The College at Brockport, State University of New York is accepting applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of African and African-American Studies. Rank will be determined based on experience and qualifications. Seeking someone with expertise in the African Diaspora beyond the United States of America, with a particular preference for those with expertise in Caribbean Studies and/or Afro-Latinx Studies.
• Teaches three courses per semester in area of specialization and in related general education courses, as assigned by the department chair.
• Maintains an active scholarly agenda appropriate to rank.
• Advises and mentors AAS students.
• Performs active service to the AAS department and to the College.
• Completed PhD in Africana Studies or a related field, from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization
• Demonstrated expertise in Latin American/Caribbean cultures and history, from an Africa-centered perspective. Other areas of the African Diaspora outside of the US will also be considered
• A record of scholarship in area of expertise appropriate to the rank of an assistant professor
• Demonstrated potential for continued high quality scholarship in area of expertise
• Demonstrated ability to effectively teach courses in area of expertise
• Demonstrated ability to effectively teach introductory courses such as Introduction to African American Studies or Institutional Racism
• Demonstrated ability to effectively mentor and advise AAS students
• Experience or demonstrated ability in administration and departmental leadership, with the potential to assume the role of department chair by the second year of appointment
• Interest in contributing to service learning opportunities for AAS students through the AAS study/service program
• Interest in community outreach
• Interest in recruiting students for the AAS major
• Interest in the department’s mission of Africa-centric research and teaching
• Expertise in another area of the African Diaspora outside of the Western Hemisphere or Africa
The Department of African and African-American Studies at the College at Brockport is a growing department; with approximately 30 majors and 20 minors. The Department has four full-time faculty and many adjunct professors with expertise in the history, sociology, education, and cultures of Africa. The faculty are also experts in the history and culture of people of African descent in North America. Our small size lends to an intimate learning environment where we nurture our students in preparation for post-graduate study and/or the workforce.
The College at Brockport, State University of New York, serves a diverse student body of over 7,100 undergraduate and 1,100 graduate students enrolled in 50 undergraduate majors and more than 50 masters’ programs.
