Dr. Elizabeth Heavey, Professor in Nursing presented at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Annual Master’s Education Conference on February 22, 2019.

Dr. Elizabeth Heavey, Professor in Nursing presented at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Annual Master’s Education Conference, utilizing gamification techniques without playing a game: How to design, develop and deploy engaging online content to promote student learning.

This presentation exhibited multiple examples of innovative teaching strategies which convey challenging content by leveraging students’ interest in social interaction, achievement, learning, status, competition/cooperation, and mastery. Developing engaging content that leads to meaningful interactions between students and their peers, instructors, and course content, promotes the application of critical thinking within the decision making process of the learner. Students who are engaged are significantly more likely to retry or reengage with content they are still working to master. Well-designed constructive feedback opportunities provide direction, promote self-correction and ultimately lead to progression and achievement.
