OEDI Holiday/Interfaith Observance Calendar
Reminder to Campus: As we begin the 2020-2021 academic year, the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion would like to remind our campus community about policy and practice for religious holiday observance.
SUNY Brockport recognizes the diverse faith traditions represented among its campus community and supports the rights of faculty, staff, and students to observe according to these traditions.
Faculty are asked to make appropriate accommodation for students’ observance needs by providing an opportunity to make up any examination, study or work requirement that is missed because of an absence due to religious observance, provided the instructor has been notified no later than the end of the second week of classes for regular session classes and by the submission deadline for flexibly formatted classes. If a faculty member is unwilling or unable to make appropriate accommodations, the student should consult his or her academic dean. Students have certain rights to make up work missed due to observation of religious holidays. The following quote is from § 224-A of the New York State Education Law: “each student who is absent from school, because of [their] religious beliefs, must be given an equivalent opportunity to register for classes or make up any examination, study or work requirements which [they] may have missed because of such absence on any particular day or days.” The full text of this law is found in the affirmative action policy: Student Absence due to Religious Beliefs — Section 224-A of the New York State Education Law.
Deans, department chairs, and program directors are asked to make every effort to avoid scheduling meetings or events at times that would exclude faculty who are observing a religious holiday from participation.
Supervisors are asked to be supportive of staff members who request vacation or personal time to observe a religious holiday and to make every effort to avoid scheduling meetings or events at times that would exclude such staff members from participation.
The Office of Equity Diversity and Inclusion recognizes that the faith traditions observed by our diverse community include more holidays than can be captured adequately in a list. In addition, some observances vary by tradition and by country and are defined by the lunar calendar. Located on the OEDI website are interfaith resources along with a Holiday Observances Calendar which lists some traditional observances, and major days of religious significance. However, If you are aware of other observances or major days of religious significance that should be listed, or if you see a misrepresentation on this list, please contact the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
