Refrigeration Mechanic Vacancy in Facilities
Responsible for journey-level work in the operation, maintenance, repair, and installation of refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment. This includes overhauling compressors, pumps and electric motors, replacing parts and controls as necessary and installing new equipment. This position is also responsible for pre-season and end-of-season cooling tower and chiller PMs, water treatment monitoring and efficiency monitoring and control adjustments.
•Inspects, tests, diagnose and repairs campus chillers, cooling towers, motors, pumps and associated equipment and controls.
•Performs seasonal start up and shut down operations to insure safe and efficient operations and to minimize damage from frozen lines.
•Support the ice arena facility chillers, cooling tower, Zambonis and associated equipment to insure a quality ice surface and surrounding area for participants, coaches and visitors.
•Locates and seals leaks in both gas units and brine units, removes air from lines and replaces with proper refrigerant. Properly controls refrigerant and documents efforts in accordance with Federal and State laws.
•Communicates collaboratively with supervisor, fellow employees, Athletics and other members of the campus community.
•Provides assistance and guidance to refrigeration assistant and oversees contractor’s efforts for projects and more critical repairs. Actively participates in meeting and special event preparations.
Non Essential Functions:
•Maintain shop and work space in a clean and orderly manner, places parts and material orders in a timely and efficient manner, interacts with CMMS and Event Management System.
Successful completion of a NYS two-year Refrigeration Mechanic Traineeship or NYS two-year refrigeration repair and maintenance training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent refrigeration two-year training or apprenticeship program;* OR four (4) years of full-time experience in the mechanical or electrical trades under a skilled journey-level mechanic or electrician which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program, one (1) year of which must include both training and work in the operation and maintenance of commercial type refrigeration or air-conditioning equipment.. Apprenticeship training in the mechanical or electrical trades or training gained by completion of technical courses in the mechanical or electrical trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of “C” or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.
•Working knowledge of the safe and efficient operation of refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment.
•Working knowledge of the procedures, materials and tools used in the maintenance, repair and installation of refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment.
•Working knowledge of the properties and qualities of the various refrigerant gases and solutions.
•Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, specifications, blue prints and schematic drawings.
•Ability to lay out and draw rough sketches and diagrams of work to be performed.
•Ability to recognize and to rectify mechanical and electrical problems existing in refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment.
•Ability to train and supervise skilled, semi-skilled and relatively unskilled workers.
•Ability to perform medium to physical labor and to work safely in trenches and from elevated surfaces such as ladders and scaffolding.
•Minimum of four years’ experience in the preventative maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment for electrical, mechanical and refrigerant containing equipment.
•Demonstrated computer experience preferably with building management systems and CMMS systems.
•Prior experience in an HVAC repair environment, including driving a Zamboni or similar resurfacing equipment.
•Universal certification in refrigeration handling per EPA Clean Air Act, 42 U.S.C. Section 7414(a) which includes all campus equipment classifications.
•Must possess a valid New York State Driver’s License, Class D or above (other than just a motorcycle license) which will be verified through NYS DMV.
•Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools and diagnostic equipment for electrical, mechanical and refrigerant containing equipment.
•Ability to handle multi-concurrent tasks.
•Familiarity with PM programs, CMMS, email and other computer-based management and communication tools.
•Ability to work overtime on short notice, and respond to off-hours emergency requests and provide an acceptable response.
•Ability to work with diverse groups, as a team, with a positive customer service attitude.
•Familiarity with pertinent codes related to building, fire and personnel safety.
•Must be able to read, comprehend and carry out written and oral instructions.
