For the arithmetically inclined...

From 19th century math professor Herman Burlingame...

Herman Burlingame, 1875

Herman Burlingame (whose home is the president's house today) was a math professor here from 1868-1891. Just like professors do today, faculty then would sometimes write textbooks, develop and sell educational kits and tools, and Burlingame was rather prolific in this area. A set of of blocks he designed for work on cube roots are on display in the Alumni House, for example.

Recently a box of materials related to the old Normal School came to us and in one envelope was a chart Burlingame created for calculating various percentages. This particular chart was a new addition to our knowledge of him, and is attached to this post.
