The Sheriff & Deputy: A Resource for Sheriffs, Deputies and Public Safety Professionals

Mr. Gary Metz, associate professor of healthcare studies, and Dr. Richard Lumb, associate professor and emeritus chair of the Department of Criminal Justice at Brockport publish in national law enforcement journal.

Mr. Gary Metz and Dr. Richard Lumb publish their article on "Altering Approaches to Addiction: The Criminal Justice System is the Place to Launch a New, More Integrated Strategy Against Substance Abuse" in the National Sheriff & Deputy Journal, Volume 70-Issue 1, January/February 2018. As the opiate and drug abuse epidemic continues to escalate in the United States, it it time we consider a variety of options for substance abuse prevention, treatment, and enforcement. This article discusses how the criminal justice system is in a unique position to provide collaborative and sustainable interventions for the addicted criminal justice offender population from their point of entry into the criminal justice system to their exit into the community.
