Highway Equipment Operator Vacancy in Facilites

Office of Facilities and Planning - Grounds Highway Equipment Operator SG-07 Full-Time, Contingent/Permanent 40 hours per week January - May, Monday - Friday 3 pm -11:30 pm June - December, Monday - Friday: 6 am - 2:30 pm Line # 00459

Position Summary:

The Highway Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy highway equipment for digs, concrete flat work, sidewalk removal and replacement and more. This position is also responsible for all CDL driving, all backhoe work, and for turning the compost pile daily. This position is also utilized by all construction crews, for construction debris removal. Further duties of this position includes performing inspections and routine maintenance on various equipment including trucks, forklifts, skid loaders, front end loaders, tractors, mowers, backhoes and sweepers.

Essential Functions:

Equipment Operation:

•Operates CDL and highway equipment.

•Inspects loaders and snowplows.

•Takes plow truck to town buildings – using loaders to fill trucks with salt.

•Checks all roadways on campus – 8 miles of road / over 1 million square foot of parking lots – frequent checks in snow.

•Works with entire campus for all digs – operates the equipment for the digs.

•Is responsible for all CDL Driving

•Operates graders for leveling and operates tractors to load materials such as dirt and rocks.

•Operates backhoe and front end loaders as required.

•Operates forklifts and dump trucks to transport trash and materials.

•Operates various equipment for general site preparation, landscaping, snow removal, and related assignments.

•Operates tailgates and/or platforms to facilitate loading and unloading of materials.

•Operate diesel and gas tractors, with backhoe, loader, and other attachments to perform various jobs, such as: digging trenches for electrical and sewer and water lines, grading and leveling, shrub and tree removal, loading/unloading trucks, digging postholes and drainage holes, miscellaneous lawn care operations.

•Operates self-propelled sweepers to clean roads of dirt and debris.

•Operates front-end loaders to load gravel onto trucks.

•Removes materials preparatory to repair and construction by using jackhammers, sanders, paint stripers, and other hand tools and equipment.


•Installs asphalt/concrete walkways, parking lots, and roads using rollers, spreaders and dump trucks.

•Installs and maintains drainage and storm water systems.

•Installs and maintains granite, concrete, and asphalt curbing.

•Digs and excavates ditches, paths, and water and steam lines using backhoe.

•Mixes and applies concrete, mortar, paving materials, paints, and other substances.

•Makes minor repairs to buildings and structures, such as unplugging drains, painting walls, cutting sheet metal and soldering.

•Controls traffic at construction and/or maintenance projects.

•Completes curb markings, striping operations, and/or other pavement markings as required.


•Fixes and replaces hinges and locks.

•Installs/repairs fences and picnic benches.

•Cleans grounds, roadways, and structures by sweeping, raking, shoveling, mowing, and removing by hand debris, leaves, branches, snow, ice, trash, etc.

•Maintains areas by cutting grass, pruning plants, cutting and removing dead branches and trees, placing mulching materials and stone, and fertilizing and watering plants and grass.

•Maintains athletic fields by cutting and raking grass, replacing sod in damaged areas, and lining and preparing fields.

•Mows campus turf and playing fields, using a variety of mowers (reel, rotary, flail, gang, etc.).

•Installs and maintains fences, guide rails, signs, walkways, and snow fencing.

•Sets up equipment, ladders, and scaffolds in preparation for special projects.

•Cleans and lubricates mechanical, electrical, and power plant equipment.

•Operates heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment.

•Performs snow removal using front-end loader and wing trucks.


•Performs routine inspection on vehicles such as checking oil, lubrication, fluids, lights, belts and tires.

•Ensures proper care in the use of equipment and supplies.

•Assists in mechanical repairs of grounds equipment.

•Performs routine maintenance and repairs on machines to ensure safe and efficient operations.

•Pumps gas and adds or drains water and/or antifreeze to radiator, oil to crankcase, air to tires and hydraulic fluid to reservoirs.

•Changes tires on machine as needed.

•Replaces burned-out or broken lamp bulbs.

•Washes machines and equipment.

•Changes oil, spark plugs and filters.

•Mounts and dismounts major assemblies, such as plows and salt spreaders, and assists mechanics in removing and installing heavy items, such as engines and transmissions.

•Maintains vehicles and equipment by cleaning, changing oil, lubricating engines and mechanical systems, scraping off rust and accretions, and replacing simple parts, such as wipers, tires, and batteries.


•Guides and trains student employees, performing related work; as appropriate to the area of operation.

•Supervises Grounds Workers or Laborers, as assigned.


•Responds to emergencies, such as utility breaks and snow removal, as required.

•Assists other campus departments with moving and special events as required.

•Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.


•Attends training (including dig safety training).

•Maintains CDL license.

•Reports dig numbers to appropriate supervisor.

•Assists with special events, such as Special Olympics, Welcome Weekend and commencement.

•Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

One year of experience in the operation of tractors or other self-propelled equipment and possession of a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle operated (CDL, classB).

Operating Needs:

•Has the ability to read and write.

•Possesses good knowledge of the operation of a variety of self-propelled equipment.

•Has basic knowledge of the Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to the safe and legal operation of the assigned equipment.

•Has basic knowledge of the routine repair and maintenance work needed by equipment.

•Is able to operate assigned machine in a safe and effective manner.

•Has the ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.

•Has the ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor.

•Possesses a working knowledge of dig safety standards.

•Is NYS Pesticide Certified within 6 months in title.

•Analyzes situations accurately utilizing a variety of techniques in order to make well-informed decisions.

•Has the ability to make decisions timely and effectively.

•Adapts well to changing priorities and working environments.

•Demonstrates appropriate judgement in carrying out responsibilities.

•Possession of a valid NY driver’s license is a requirement for this job (CDL, class B).

•Flexible schedule, including evening, weekends, and holidays

Working Environment:

•May be subject to exposure to outside elements of working with hazardous materials, schedule changes based on needs of the College, long hours to complete/perform scheduled or emergency functions/projects.

•Moderate physical activity. Requires lifting objects up to 50 pounds.

•Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

•Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, and/or loud noises.


Highway Equipment Operator SG-07, reports to Head Grounds Supervisor.

Under general supervision, operates various equipment including graders, tractors, backhoes, front-end loaders, dump trucks. May also include forklifts and skid steer loaders.
