The History Department at The College at Brockport, State University of New York, is accepting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Modern U.S. History to start August 2019. The department seeks a colleague who can be part of a collaborative team of faculty-scholars dedicated to excellent teaching, research, and service to the college community.

Major Responsibilities

The Assistant Professor in Modern U.S. History with expertise in public history and/or digital humanities will teach courses and engage students from across the college, including those in undergraduate and graduate History programs and a growing minor in museum studies and public history. Candidates should be able to teach: introductory survey (U.S. since 1865); upper division courses in modern U.S. history, area(s) of candidate’s specialty and public history; and graduate seminars (including online learning) in our History Master’s program. The successful candidate will maintain an active program of scholarship and publication and share in the collegial and constructive governance of the History Department and the College. Candidates should be able to work closely with students as an academic advisor, internship mentor, and independent project supervisor (e.g. public history projects, MA theses, etc.) and help coordinate the Museum Studies & Public History minor.

Required Qualifications

• PhD by time of appointment from a US Department of Education accredited college or university or an internationally accredited organization

• Specialty in Modern U.S. History

• Training in Public History and/or Digital Humanities

• Demonstrated teaching excellence at the college level

• Evidence of scholarly productivity and plan for peer review publication

• Excellent communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience developing and teaching credit-bearing course(s) at the college level

• Experience supervising student internships and/or independent research projects

• Engagement in the field of Public History or Digital Humanities

Department Description

The History Department at the College at Brockport cultivates a close and diverse community of learning in which students work together with faculty in and out of the classroom while studying a wide array of historical periods, subjects, and methodologies. The Department’s survey, upper division, and graduate courses on ancient and modern histories of regions spanning the world attract students from across the college and the History minor and major (many of whom are in the teacher certification program), interdisciplinary Museum Studies and Public History minor, and History Master’s program-- whose four tracks include ones in American History and Public History. Our students conduct research and many pursue internships and participate in study abroad programs. Our fourteen full-time faculty-- eight World Historians (including Europeanists) and six Americanists—are productive scholars, collegial partners in Department governance, and active citizens of the college and broader communities.
