To Members of The College at Brockport Community:
Earlier today, Governor David Paterson—collaborating with SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher—issued a news release featuring a monumental bill entitled The Public Higher Education Empowerment and Innovation Act. Links are available on both the Governor’s and SUNY’s web sites.
This may be the most influential act impacting higher education public policy that I have witnessed in my five years at The College at Brockport and in SUNY, as well as decades devoted to public higher education. It clearly recognizes that our SUNY institutions are economic drivers that create jobs and educate future citizens in the Empire State.
This comprehensive bill will offer tremendous and long awaited flexibility to our SUNY campuses, especially related to a fair and equitable tuition policy. These sweeping changes would end over-regulation and enable greater opportunities for public-private partnerships and entrepreneurial activities to boost the state’s economy. In addition, the Act would streamline the processes for construction projects and procurement.
I already have placed personal calls to area legislators urging them to support this Act that benefits the hundreds of thousands of students who attend our state university. I hope you will do the same. As we begin the Spring Semester just ten days from today, please know that I deeply appreciate your advocacy for this landmark legislation to help our College and SUNY.
